英美式英文中關係代名詞 which 與 that 用法之差異

英文關係子句 (relative clause) 中的關係代名詞 (relative pronoun) 在先行詞 (antecedent) 為物，且關係子句限定 (restrictive) 修飾時，有兩個選擇：that 與 which。以前課堂中，通常會說兩者是通用的，表達完全一樣的意思。但真的完全通用嗎？

實際上，兩者通用是英式英文的用法。在美式英語中，關係子句限定修飾時，強烈建議使用 that，而非 which。雖然 which 表達的意思與 that 相同，語法也都正確，但美式英文的正式寫作中，which 通常用於非限定的關係子句，that 則用於限定的關係子句。有人 (K. Sainani) 甚至武斷地認為，that 即為限定的用法，而 which 即為非限定的用法。不過我認為，使用時雖不必吹毛求疵，但如果剛好注意到，不妨改成讀者習慣的用法。

範例：
英式 (O) I am looking for the book that you gave me.
英式 (O) I am looking for the book which you gave me.
美式 (O) I am looking for the book that you gave me.
美式 (?) I am looking for the book which you gave me.

備註：which 與 that 皆有許多意思，以上僅探討關係代名詞的用法。
